Sanford Shill Randall
Born: 10/3/1961, Monticello, Utah
Sanford Shill Randall was born in Monticello, on October 3, 1961 to Ruel and Ella Nadine Randall. He was the sixth of eight children (Harriet, Jared, Julie, Todd, Barbara, Sheldon and Kristen).
Sanford wrestled, ran cross country, and participated in track during his years at Monticello High School. He was a state champion in cross country and in the mile run. He served a mission in Tokyo, Japan for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Sanford married Laurie Phillips on July 18, 1987 in the Mesa Arizona Temple.
Sanford began his law enforcement career with the City of Monticello, and then was hired by the Utah Highway Patrol. He started his 28 year career with the UHP in Moab, but moved to Monticello within a year. During his career with the UHP he was a dog handler and a Sergeant. He was known for helping people that ended up stranded in San Juan County. He would help them get a hotel room, make them breakfast, drive them to pick up rental cars, and even have some stay in his home.
Sanford spent a great deal of time with the youth of Monticello. He coached the cross country team for a few years and led them to 3 state championships. He has held youth callings in the LDS church for many years. He enjoyed his time spent with the youth and has enjoyed watching the kids he has worked with grow throughout the years.
Sanford lived a rich life, full of the things he loved. Sanford can be called many things: Hunter, Trapper, Fisherman, Officer. But the title he was most proud to have was Father. Sanford spent his life living it the way he felt best directed his children to follow his example.
Sanford was a chosen child of our Heavenly Father and his presence in this world will be missed. Through his example and direction his family knows that Sanford and his family will be reunited again with him once again leading the way.
Sanford is preceded in death by his father Ruel Randall. He is survived by his mother, siblings, wife Laurie, children Kaitlyn Liebert (Will), Chase (Shaylyn), Loren Holyoak (Wyatt) and Robin Thatcher (Mason); and grandchildren Addison, Jack, and Ty Liebert, and Ella Holyoak.
Funeral Services were held Saturday January 13, 2018 at 12:00 noon at the Monticello Stake Center with a viewing starting a 9:30 am the day of the service. Burial followed at the Monticello Cemetery with rites done by the Utah Highway Patrol.
Tributes:Dear Randall Family,
It was with deep sadness I learned of Sanford's illness and death. He holds a special place within my heart.
28 years ago, this April, I wrecked my pickup enroute to Monticello to do my wedding invitations. Sanford was the officer on duty. He drove to Monticello to personally tell my parents of the wreck, as he did not want them to get the news over the phone. I remember him every time I go home and pass the wreck site. His love for others showed through simple kindnesses.
I had been in his parents' home while a young child and remember sliding down the stairway with Kristin, Sheldon, and Sanford. I think we propped open the door and were awarded points for distance attained.
Sanford will be missed but always in my heart. Thank you Officer Randall for your service.
- Kitty (Barton) YoungI was so pleased to talk with Sanford @ the reunion. I am so very sorry for your loss.
