Leo Ray Alger passed away May 13, 2018 at his home in Moab.

Ray was born on July 20, 1924 in Price, Utah. He was the oldest of five children born to Leo L. and Marie Price Alger. He spent his young life at the family farm in Cleveland, Utah, and Moon Lake in the High Uintahs, where his family developed the original Moon Lake Resort. As a young man he led horse pack trips for tourists.

Ray graduated from high school in Price, Utah and attended Carbon College. He worked in the coal mines briefly and joined the Navy when World War II broke out.

Ray was an electrician, as were most of the men in his family. After the war, he homesteaded in Alaska, and worked on the Aleutian Islands on equipment for the U.S. Government. He came to Moab, Utah after hearing about the uranium boom, and settled in Moab, opening his business, A & E Electric. After 40-plus years he sold his electrical contracting business and retired.

Ray married Ellen Cairns Brock in 1960 in Moab, and helped her raise her three children. Ray always had horses and a few cattle on the side that he housed on his place in Moab. He trained and (when he was younger) jockeyed his own quarter horses and had many trophies and ribbons depicting wins on the racing circuit. He spent his retirement years at his home in Moab with Ellen, and traveling, and racing his horses.

Ray is survived by his brother, Glenn P. Alger of Salt Lake City, Utah; daughters Katie Brock Hanway (Murray) of Moab, Utah; Bonnie Brock Walker (Ray) of Sandy, Utah; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren, and a large, extended family of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen; his son, James B. Brock; brothers, Reed and Boyd Alger; and sister, Janice Alger Cracroft.

Ray is remembered fondly, and will be missed by his family, and his many friends.

Services will be Saturday, May 19 at 11:00 a.m. at the Moab L.D.S. Church, 475 West 400 North, Moab, Utah. Viewing Friday May 18 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Spanish Valley Mortuary, 386 north 100 West, Moab Utah and one hour prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Grand County Food Bank, Moab Utah.

They Live OnThey Live On

   Those we love remain with us
   For love itself lives on;

   Cherished memories never fade
   Because one loved is gone.

   Those we love can never be
   More than a thought apart;

   For as long as there’s a memory,
   They live on within our heart.
