Boyd A. Hawks passed away peacefully at his home early Sunday, Aug. 18, 2019 with loved ones around him.

Boyd was born in Moab, Utah on Dec. 23, 1935 to Thyrill Hawks and Leona Black. He married Sue (Casey) on Feb. 26, 1956. They had 35 wonderful years together before her death in 1991. He then married Percilla (Campbell) Stewart (widow of David Stewart) Nov. 27, 1996.

Boyd loved the La Sal Mountains, hunting, fishing, and dancing and most of all being with family and friends. He loved people. He always had the best stories to tell and would often throw in a “True Story, like I said” every few sentences.

He worked at Atlas for years in both the mines and as a large engine mechanic. He could fix pretty much anything if he had enough time. He had many, many jobs from the time he was quite young. He was taught to work as a boy and would often go with his dad and uncles to shear sheep or mine ore.

He was a “jack of all trades.” He worked for many years with his father-in-law, Darrell Casey, doing cement work. Darrell often said, “He’s a bit late getting started, but he outworks every man there.”

He retired from Moab City. He served for six years in the United States Air Force where he trained as a radio operator and was one of the first people to hear the “Blip…Blip” of the USSR Sputnik Oct. 4, 1957 while stationed in Japan.

Surviving are their children: Marcie (Kevin) Carter of Kaysville, Utah; Tim Stewart, Teressa (Skeet) Lammert, Tammy (Bill) Jackson, Debi and Shelley Hawks all of Moab; 11 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren.

Boyd is also survived by brothers, Kay (Barbara) Hawks, Ralph (Marylin) Hawks, and sisters Gwen Grant, Merlene (Darrell) Dalton, Sharon (Jay) Woodruff, Kathy (Tony) Martineau, Carol (Tom) Sommerville, his cousin, Bob Hawks, who was more like a brother; and his 106-year old mother-in-law Lavada Casey; plus lots of nieces and nephews.

His first wife, Sue; mother and father, brothers, Raymond and Stanley; sister, Gerry Sly; and two granddaughters - Katy Casey Carter and Chloe Nichole Sims, preceded him in death.

Viewing is from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23 at the Spanish Valley Mortuary with graveside services held at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24 at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery with military honors.

A special thanks to hospice nurses, Margie and Mary; his nurses Danniel, and Christine Brant for being more than a nurse, she’s a caring friend; his physical therapist, Matt and pulmonary specialist Ray and his VA doctor, Ranae Dunn.

We want to send our love and prayers to all of Boyd's family. We have known Boyd since he was a little one. We all went to the same school and we all knew everyone like family. Love,
- Bill & Inalyn

Our very best wishes and prayers are with you in your time of mourning.

So sorry to learn of Boyd passing. I was out of town so I didn't hear about it until I returned. I met Boyd when I went to work for Atlas in 1978. From day one he was just one of the nicest guys ever. Infectious laugh, great sense of humor. Years later he hired me in the parks dept. for the city. More great times. Just one of my favorite people ever. I loved Boyd. Deepest sympathies to the family and rest in peace.

They Live OnThey Live On

   Those we love remain with us
   For love itself lives on;

   Cherished memories never fade
   Because one loved is gone.

   Those we love can never be
   More than a thought apart;

   For as long as there’s a memory,
   They live on within our heart.
