Lavada Mae Casey

Lavada Bly Casey, passed away one month to the day of her 107th birthday, Thursday Oct. 3, 2019 at 1:10pm at her residence in the Canyonlands Care Center. Death was incident to age.

Born the year the titanic sank, Nov 3, 1912 in Jamestown, Arkansas to Zack and Rena (Quick) Bly. The oldest of 10 children. Lavada grew up in Jamestown AR, and attended school through the 9th grade at the Breckenridge school in Jamestown. She married Darrel Casey Jan. 1, 1937 in Clarksville, AR. They had 3 children and lived the first part of their married life in Jamestown, AR where her husband was a coal miner and construction worker. They lived in several states until they settled in Moab, Utah where they lived 60 years. Lavada worked as a cook and manager of the school kitchen at both the South East Elementary and Helen M. Knight Elementary for 18 years. She learned to drive at age 65, so she could get herself to work and she was baptized a member of the Community Baptist Church in 1961.

After the death of her children and husband, Lavada moved back to her hometown of Clarksville, AR for about 12 years. She recently returned to Utah 3 years ago to be near her grand-children and great-grandchildren.

Survived by Barbara Bly Pharis (Johnnie, deceased), Jim Bly (Margie), Tom Bly (Barbara); daughter Pat (Campbell) Hawks. Daughter-in-law Carol (Rogers) Freudiger; 5 grand-daughters, Marcie Hawks (Kevin) Carter, Debi & Shelley Hawks, Michele Casey, and Amanda Flanigan; 6 great-grandchildren, 12 great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by her parents, siblings and their spouses, Horace Bly (Ida), David Bly (Peggy), Bill Bly (Edyth), Bob Bly (Marty), husband Darrel Casey, baby son Jackie Lee Norris, Daughter Sue Hawks, sons baby Casey and Ken Casey; 2 grand-children Troy Michael Casey, James Richard Casey, and a great-grand daughter, Katherine Casey Carter.

Grandma wanted to remember Bob & Yvonne Hawks (Yvonne deceased) and their children, who were like family, who helped and cared for Buster and her after the loss of their children.

A viewing will be held Sunday Oct. 13, 2019 5pm-7pm @ Spanish Valley Mortuary, and Funeral Service on Monday Oct. 14, 2019 11am @ Community Church of Moab. Burial to follow at the Sunset memorial Gardens Cemetery.

The family would like to thank the Mary Martha’s and Pastor Keith of the Community Church of Moab. In lieu of flowers please donate to the American Cancer Society.
