Dorothy Mae Larrabee
Born: 4/7/1927, Moab, Utah
Dorothy was born April 7, 1927 in Moab, Utah to Lloyd and Naomi (Fornoff) Somerville. She was the oldest of three daughters, Dorothy, Norma (Day), and Ruth (Oliver). She enjoyed growing up on the Somerville ranch, five miles south of Moab. Her young life was spent in and around Moab where she attended school and even played the trumpet in the high school band.
Dorothy met her husband, Gale Horton in 1942. They married and became the parents to three children, Norman (Jill), Diane, (Bob Tangren) and Kathleen (Larry Robb). Gale was a miner which meant several moves for the family. Wherever she went she adjusted quickly and was a good friend to everyone she met.
Dottie Mae worked as a cook in the school hot lunch program at many schools in Moab and loved her time preparing good, healthy food for the children. She was always a wonderful cook and later in her life she worked at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas and was the snack bar manager for Safeway grocery chain.
Las Vegas, Nevada became her home in 1965 and it also marked the end of her marriage to Gale Horton. She married Norm Larrabee in 1975 and shortly thereafter moved to Hurricane, Utah. Following Norm's death in 1990 she moved back to Las Vegas and was happy to be with some of her family again. She moved back to Moab in May, 2014 and lived with her daughter Diane in Moab and then St. George for the remainder of her life.
She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and held many church callings. She was also a temple ordinance worker at the Las Vegas LDS Temple for fourteen years. Dorothy was a true example of a follower of Jesus Christ. Her love for her Heavenly Father and her family knew no bounds. In spite of the challenges of life, she was always joyful and her silly sense of humor brought so much laughter and fun to everyone who knew her. Her life was a true blessing to all.
She is survived by two of her children, Norman (Jill) and Diane (Bob Tangren, deceased), and preceded in death by her daughter Kathy (Larry Robb) and her sisters. She adored her grandchildren- Paul (Amy), Brian, Darren (Sandy), Scott (Molly), Tracy (Steve), Jenna (Daryl), Kara (Kelly), Roger (Tami), Matthew (Tracie) and Spencer (Mandy), 32 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 on Saturday, November 2nd at the Bloomington Hills 3rd Ward Building, with a viewing at 10:00 prior to the service.
Services will also be held in Moab, Utah on Tuesday, November 5 at the 4th North LDS Chapel, 10:00 viewing and 11:00 service. Following the Moab service, interment will be in the Grand Valley Cemetery.
