They Live OnThey Live On

   Those we love remain with us
   For love itself lives on;

   Cherished memories never fade
   Because one loved is gone.

   Those we love can never be
   More than a thought apart;

   For as long as there’s a memory,
   They live on within our heart.

Jeffrey Eric Fink

b: 06/02/1956,
d: 06/05/2023, Castle Valley, Utah
Service: Pending

OBITUARY

Those of us who knew and were friends with Jeffrey Fink were shocked and saddened by his sudden and unexpected death last Monday, June 5, just three days after his 67th birthday. He was mowing weeds in his yard when he experienced an apparent cardiac event. Intense efforts to revive him by his wife Laurie, the Castle Valley fire chief, Grand County Sherrif's deputies, and Grand County Emergency Medical personnel were unsuccessful.

Jeff was born June 2, 1956, in Van Nuys, California, and received a degree in chemistry from the University of California at Northridge. He worked in the aerospace industry and retired as a rocket scientist, engineer, and chemist for the Boing Corporation and other contractors in California. In Utah, he was the lead trail technician for Ride with Respect, an organization that aims to protect natural resources on public land through trail restoration. He also developed a trail around his five-acre property and he could be seen riding his mountain bike around the single-track loop most days. He loved nature.

Jeff was a certified wildland firefighter with the Castle Valley Fire District where he was also a valuable resource for maintenance and repair projects on the district's engines. A fellow firefighter summed up the feeling of the rest of the fire department when he said "Jeff and I kind of connected working together on projects or riding in the same engine. It is shocking to learn he has passed."

He leaves behind his wife Laurie of 28 years, his father, and two sisters. Jeff will be missed but not soon forgotten.

Cremation has taken place and a service is pending.

TRIBUTES

For some reason Jeff liked me to call him Rat Fink. I named an obstacle on the Pipe Dream Trail after him that is called the Rat Fink Funnel, since he dug it out. It is a tunnel (a stacked on rock arch) that you have to duck to get through it. I really like talking to Jeff when he was building the Pipe Dream Trail. I'm glad I talked to him last fall. Jeff was a super nice guy, a hard worker, a great person and a good friend.
