They Live OnThey Live On

Those we love remain with us
   For love itself lives on;

   Cherished memories never fade
   Because one loved is gone.

Those we love can never be
   More than a thought apart;

For as long as there’s a memory,
They live on within our heart.

TRIBUTES

"Shummy" was an inspiration to me both in cycling and aerobics. She taught aerobics at the Belmont Athletic Club in Long Beach and was the strongest woman I have ever met! Mentally and physically! The greatest favor she did for me was introducing me to her agent, Charlie Litsky, who became a fast friend and influence as well. I can only hope that now they're both in a better place, riding their Yeti mountain bikes, and enjoying each other's company.

I am so saddened to read of her passing. I knew Deborah thru her bicycle racing career. I have recently been having a ton of flashbacks training with her due to all of the recent press for the renewal of the 2022 Women's Tour De France as she has been featured in many of the current press articles for the USA National team where she would podium in 3rd place at her first attempt in a world Grand Tour race. I remember how all of us local racers were so proud of our local girl making it into the big time! A side from all of the miles riding in the hills of Palos Verdes I had the privilege to travel with her to several stage races including the Maller Memorial in Flagstaff and the Death Valley to Mt Whitney races and she was always such a joy to be around and I will never forget her radiant smile regardless of the awful hours we had to get up to make it to the starting line. The road race in Arvin California was another fun memory as I had finally built my dream bike Raleigh T.I. Team that matched the bike Deborah was then racing. I think she won the women's stage and I got outsprinted in my race but we had a ton of fun that day. The last time I saw her was at the bike show and we caught up very quickly in a rushed environment of the tradeshow floor but it felt like not a day had gone by since we last saw each other. Every year I went to the show I always hoped I would run into her again to say hi! I would like to wish my sincerest and deepest condolences to Greg, her family, all of her friends and former team mates. She made a huge and positive impact in this world and I surely will never forget her. May you rest in peace.

RiP Deborah Shumway.

A song for 'Shummy’

    Goodbye America’s Rose
May you ever grow in our hearts
Now that you belong to heaven
And the stars spell out your name
    Never fading with the sunset
Or when the rain sets in

    The loveliness we've lost
These empty days without your smile
    This torch we'll always carry
    And even though we try
The truth brings us to tears
    All our words cannot express
The joy you brought us through the years

    Goodbye America's Rose
May you ever grow in our hearts
We'll miss the love of your compassion
    More than you'll ever know

Your candle's burned out long before
    Your legend ever will

This is for all her friends. There are some things that happen no one can explain. Today and for the rest of my life there will be sorrow.

I have known Deborah Leigh Shumway Herbold for as long as 45+ years or so. We worked together on beautiful artistic projects. We have both enjoyed many great trips up Northern California and great fun projects. I respect her artistic mind and how she used her visual talent creating beautiful faux painted walls. Deborah was some what an inspirational soul to me as well. Deborah Shumway Herbold had the physical stamina of a woman and exhibited her talent when she was a professional cyclist. I thought she embodied what a talented woman is, inside and outside! I met Deborah through another good friend, Barbara Bays. Barbara and I also shared field trips with Deborah. I cannot believe she was gone!! I will MISS you and I am sorry that I was NOT there to be with you when you needed someone like a real true friend and confidant! I felt like YOU needed more than a good friend. Deborah Shumway, may you have a peaceful, restful journey to heaven... some how I will meet you some day... again. I am so sorry I was not able to talk to you before you left this world. Rest in peace my sweet beautiful friend. I was glad I was able to see you work on that faux painting for my bakery 4 years ago! I cannot believe it has been 4 years since I last saw you in FLESH. But we talked at times on the phone after that. I wish I was able to help you during your time of NEED. Rest in peace, my good friend! I pray you are at peace and out of pain and misery. And I hope you find your way to heaven and away from this harsh world. Have a peaceful journey and enjoy your trip to heaven, my beautiful friend: This is Linda, your friend photographer and we will meet again when the time comes, someday. Thank you for the beautiful memories! Trips to New Mexico. To San Francisco. To Los Angeles etc! ARRIVEDERCI! ARRIVEDERCI. Goodbye for now. Rest in Peace. Will miss your pretty smile. I will cherish the beautiful memories.

Arrivederci... Lovely Deborah...
Thought to wander a road
Unknown to many, at least for now.
Ratiocination you got?? Blurry.
Flurry exodus, your bright token.
Or God have spoken
Taking Deborah immemorially.
Left us so soon? Exiting untimely.
Would know NOT cheerfully!
Never to lay eyes one more time,
Bring tears of anguish...
Never to question. Never be forgotten.
And NOT meant to comprehend.
What GOD had designed.
Where ever YOU are,
Will cherish that pretty smile.
KNOW, YOU are truly loved.
Trusting will cross your path
Once again, when time is RIPE.
Safe journey, our lovely Deb,
Arrivederci, till we meet again!
Your long time pal,
With Love

I'm so sad with the news of Deborah's passing. I lost touch with her over the years, but will never forget her presence. Prayers for Peace.

I remember watching Debbie race the women's tour and being inspired to take up cycling myself. It was so exciting to see the women racing in France and the press loved Deborah!! I was hoping to meet you one day championne. Ride on through the stars!! You have inspired many!!
- Marion Clignet

What sad news to receive about Deborah's passing away. On the bike, she was tough as nails. She was gutsy, determined, savvy and a steady wheel to ride behind. Off the bike, she was reserved, humble and anyone would agree she was "Bo Derek beautiful". I'm so sad to hear she's gone. Sending love and sympathy to all those she left behind.

I will always cherish our opportunity to be bike racing team mates, especially during the 1984 Women's Tour de France! You were a Beast and that fierce competitor in you awarded you 3rd Overall at the hardest bike race on earth - WTdF. Tom and I also enjoyed meeting you in Long Beach for training, back in the day. Those were some fun times! I'm glad we stayed in touch over the years, but sorry we didn't get together more. You are loved and missed my dear friend!

This news comes as a terrible surprise for those of us in her hometown of Amherst,MA. She was loved by all. She was on my cheerleading team for a couple of years. She even stayed with her cyclists with us in Phoenix, AZ for a few days. We all have many fond memories of her. If anyone has any information on what happened to her, many people would greatly appreciate it. You can find me on Facebook under Pauline Elizabeth Straub or email at pestraub@att.net. Thank you for your help.

I so loved Deb. Just amazing to work with and joke with. She helped me with one of the biggest projects I ever did and we became instant friends. Humble and great at everything. Damn I will miss seeing that smile. Rest in peace my friend.
