Born on January 25, 1929, in Eureka, Illinois, Stan grew up with his older sister on his family’s farm. He attended school through eighth grade in a rural, one-room schoolhouse, moving after that to Eureka Township High School in town. After graduation in 1947, he attended Goshen College in Goshen, Indiana earning his Associates of Arts degree. Through the Mennonite church, he entered voluntary service for two years in Akron, PA and Haggerston, MD. During the Korean War, as a practicing pacifist and contientious objector, Stan was drafted into alternative service in 1952 through the Mennonite Central Committee and spent the following two years in the interior of Puerto Rico helping to build a hospital to provide services there for people in need. After returning from Puerto Rico in 1954, Stan finished his education at Brown’s School of Business in Peoria, majoring in Accounting and Auditing. In 1957, he pulled up stakes and moved to Denver, Colorado in search of new adventure. It was during this time that he met Marvel Siemens. They married in Morrison, CO on November 27, 1959. Stan worked as an office manager for Meadow Gold Creamery until 1966. After that, he found new employment as an accountant with Atlas Minerals. In 1980, he moved with Marvel and their two children from Denver to Southeastern Utah when Atlas consolidated their offices in Moab. When Atlas Minerals closed in the mid-1980’s, he wasn’t ready to retire and spent the next two decades working several different temporary and part-time jobs to keep the household afloat. For many years he delivered the Ad-Vertiser each week to all the businesses in town. He was a faithful member of the Community Church of Moab, serving throughout the years as a deacon, the church treasurer and on many church committees. He loved music and singing, was a long-time member of the church choir and looked forward to the Moab Music Festival concerts every year. Stan enjoyed reading and gardening and worked constantly to tame the landscaping on the property around the house. He was practical, hard-working, and always busy and never let any moss grow under his feet. He was devoted to his family and would do anything to help his kids and grandkids. He loved a clean joke with a good punch line. His life was a living example of strong Christian values. His passing on Valentine’s Day is a beautiful reminder of his devotion to Marvel and their marriage of 60 years. He will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts. Stan is survived by his daughter Terri; his son Kent (Karen); his grandchildren, Emmie Gerrard and Tyler, and his great-grandchildren, Calvin and Stephanie. He is preceded in death by his wife, his parents Walter and Alvina, and by his sister, Verelda. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held Thursday, February 20, at the Community Church of Moab, 544 MiVida Drive at 10:00am. Spanish Valley Mortuary has been entrusted with arrangements.
