They Live OnThey Live On

   Those we love remain with us
   For love itself lives on;

   Cherished memories never fade
   Because one loved is gone.

   Those we love can never be
   More than a thought apart;

   For as long as there’s a memory,
   They live on within our heart.

OBITUARY

Ed Nettell, resident of Moab since 2008, passed away August 9, 2024.

Ed was born in Grass Valley, Nevada County, California, to John Nettell and Mabel Sandow Nettell in 1928. Both parents were lifelong residents of Nevada County. Ed’s grandparents emigrated from Cornwall, England, where both grandfathers had worked in the tin mines. That experience led them to the gold mines of California’s Mother Lode.

After graduating from Grass Valley High School in 1945, Ed attended the Berkeley campus of the University of California where he majored in mathematics and minored in music. At Cal he played in the university band, was a member of Theta Xi Fraternity, and was involved in the ROTC program, leaving with a second lieutenant’s commission in army ordnance.

Following his time in the army, he taught and counseled in California public schools for 38 years, retiring in 1990 from Mt. San Antonio College.

Among Ed’s interests were music (band in particular), photography, amateur radio, and stamp collecting. Ed is preceded in death by Artharene (Artie), his wife of 68 years, and survived by sons Walt, Chuck, and Andy, daughters-in-law Charlotte, Susan, and Marcee respectively, and grandchildren Alexa and Zach.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations to be made to Grand County Hospice or Nevada County, California, Historical Society at nevadacountyhistory.org.

Friends and family are invited to share tributes online at SpanishValleyMortuary.com or SVMC.US.

TRIBUTES

Ed was a good man and a fellow trumpet player, and I will miss our visits and conversations. Rest in peace, Ed.

Read in the paper of your father's passing. My condolences to you Andy and Marcee.
- Michele

I received your letter of your father's passing. I send my heartfelt condolences to you and your family. Your father was my counselor while I attended Mount San Antonio College 1974 to 1978. He was a wonderful, kind man which made such a difference in my college experience. I had applied for the nursing program and had all of my prerequisites plus good grades, but the nursing program had passed me by. He fought for me and got me into the upcoming nursing program and saved me another year in school waiting for another chance to get in. He was and has remained my hero! After graduating from the nursing program, we sent Christmas letters to each other for years and years until his Christmas letters stopped coming. I naturally suspected a change of his health or demise. I SO appreciate your letter of update and his memorial program. God Bless you Mr. Nettell, you made a huge difference in my life and so many others!! My HERO! Rest well!
- Mrs Terri Cornilliac
